The
Munros
The
Munro's are Scottish Hills over 3000ft. On the last update there was
a total of 511 peaks over 3000 ft, with 284 being merited separate Munro
status. The remaining 227 are known as Munro Tops. The Munro's are named
after Sir Hugh Thomas Munro, who was born in 1856. He compiled a list
of Scottish Peaks over 3000ft well before Ordnance Survey started producing
reliable maps. Unfortunately he never quite climbed all the peaks before
he died at the age of 63, with only 3 peaks remaining. I don't think
that even Sir Hugh, would have imagined how popular the Munro's would
become. Munro fever has certainly gripped the nation with countless
books giving route information, times and distances and local accommodation.
The stunning pictures are always a big lure to get you onto the hills.
